A fold flat box is die-cut so the walls collapse and the lid folds over the top, so it ships and stores flat and is assembled around the product without glue.
A foldable gift box does the same job as a rigid box on the shelf and a very different job in the warehouse. Because the walls collapse, a carton holds several times more units, freight is charged on a smaller volume, and a brand can hold stock in a spare room instead of a pallet rack.

A fold flat gift box takes a fraction of the volume of the assembled box, so a carton or an air shipment carries several times the units. On small and mid-size runs that saving often outweighs the difference in unit cost.

Every foldable box is assembled by hand at packing. A box that closes in two movements is worth more than one that needs eight, particularly at a thousand units a week.

The visible difference between a foldable magnetic gift box and a rigid box is the corner. Wrapped edges, a concealed magnet and a lined interior close most of that gap.

Collapsible walls lose rigidity where they fold. Board grade, the number of fold lines and the way the base locks decide whether the box survives an outer mailer.

The walls are die-cut with fold lines so they collapse inward, and the whole box ships flat. At packing the walls are raised, the base locks, and the lid folds over the top and closes on magnets set into the front edge. No glue is used at assembly.
A rigid box is stiffer at the corners, so a fold flat box needs a higher board grade or a locking base to match it. For most gift and e-commerce weights a well-built foldable box performs the same in transit.
